SimBall and SimDB mobile app

SimDB mobile app for facilitating healthcare simulations

Faculty in Drexel’s Department of Emergency Medicine have developed a mobile application to guide educators through a simulation and debriefing.  The app is designed to facilitate both large and small groups of learners in an engaging platform that addresses the traditional concerns of simulation-based education activities.  Customizable scripts are provided to outline the debriefing process, giving instructors the ability to implement their own cases for study.  The app takes care of administrative tasks, such as tracking attendance, cases each student completes, and questions each student has answered throughout the case.  Feedback from the participants is collected at the end of the simulation, providing valuable information to instructors to tailor the case in subsequent sessions.  The app is currently in prototype form; further user interface design is being carried out before moving to beta testing.

Applications

  • Administration of simulations to large or small groups
  • Healthcare training
  • General education use

Advantages

  • Engage learners in efficient debriefing after simulation
  • Customizable platform
  • Records student attendance, cases, and questions answered
  • Collects feedback from students
  • Web-based program can be used with any device
